STAIRCASE

interactive art

At first what you see is an ordinary-looking pine staircase except that the treads have all been removed and water substituted for wood. Then as you turn to the side of it you can see that the structure is filled with drawers that have handles. This is a participatory artwork and the drawers can be opened and closed - they are also filled with water. One of the venues where this water installation was sited was MODA outsize at the Museum of Domestic Design and Architecture in Barnet. It was a very hot summer, and when it was deinstalled the curator told me that a frog had taken up residence in one of the drawers and had stayed there for the whole exhibition period.
